As my trip through Guyana continued, I headed out to try something special: Guyanese Chinese food! Come with me and let’s see what Chinese food in Guyana is all about!
Guyanese Chinese food is Chinese food made using Guyanese ingredients and cooking techniques, so it’s a true fusion of the two cultures. To try some, my guide Stacey and I would be heading to the New Thriving Chinese Restaurant in Georgetown. It’s a massive restaurant and we’d be having roughly a dozen dishes there!

Inside, we headed back into the kitchen, where I saw the cooks preparing Peking duck, steamed vegetables, paradise fried rice, and more. The paradise rice contains pineapple, diced chicken, and vegetables. They serve it in a pineapple!
Next were Singapore noodles, which are like glass noodles. They pan-fry them in a wok with a sauce and then add vegetables. Then, they also made a sweet & sour chicken. They batter and fry the chicken and then stir-fry them in a sauce with vegetables.
We tried the sweet & sour chicken right in the kitchen. It was sour and sweet but also had some heat to it. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was like a nice glaze.
Then, they fried some eggplant they’d cut into spirals and skewered. They deep-fried them, plated them, and then added a sweet chili sauce on top.
The sweet chili eggplant was phenomenal! It was so soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. It was the best fried eggplant I’ve ever eaten! The sauce was insane! They followed that by making pinecone fish, which they batter and fry until it looks like a pinecone. Then, they top it with sauce and vegetables!
They also made some lightly fried beef and some rice with vegetables. I was loving the Cantonese cuisine with a Guyanese twist!
At our table, we had all of our dishes on a lazy Susan. I started with my coconut water and then jumped on the Singapore noodles, stir-fried vegetables, steamed dumplings, Peking duck, and more.
The Singapore noodles were beautiful and light, and the stir-fried beef melted in my mouth. The sauce was incredible and sweet, with a bit of heat. I also loved the lightness and tropical flavors of the paradise fried rice. The pineapple was fantastic!
I also loved the pinecone fish. It reminded me of a similar fish dish I’d had in Suzhou, China back in 2019. The sweet and sour sauce on it was delicious. The batter was perfect. The steamed garlic prawns were also incredible. There was garlic flavor, but it wasn’t super potent.
Then, we grabbed some of the wraps and placed the Peking duck and sauce inside, along with a crispy rice cracker. Everything together was heavenly. The skin of the duck was nice and crispy, just the way I like it!

#7 Guyana Souse
Now, even though this might not look like the most appetizing recipe in the world, believe us when we tell you, it tastes AMAZING. The ingredient that many people have a hard time getting used to are the chicken feet. They boiled until very tender in a bot of water, with a few cloves of garlic and some salt.
Once the chicken feet are done, they’re added to a bowl with water. To season the water, you will add some salt and black pepper, and of course, don’t forget the lime juice. On top of that, you will sprinkle on some finely chopped scallions, parsley, a whole onion cut into rings, a little bit of chili for the added kick, and slices of cucumber.
Before serving, leave it for about an hour, to let the flavors combine and then everyone can just dig in.
#6 Guyana Black Pudding
You know how black pudding is made?! Well, in that case, you won’t be surprised to find out that the Guyanese Black pudding follows the same basic recipe. The main ingredient you will need for this is animal blood and rice.
Inside the rice and blood, they add some Geera, graham masala, Green seasoning, garlic and onion and then the season with some salt and pepper and the most important ingredient of all is SMASHING THAT LIKE BUTTON IF YOU HAVEN’T DONE SO ALREADY.
Did you do it? Good! Now that the mix is ready, they fill some pork intestines with the mix, making sure to spread out the rice evenly. Once they’re boiled in hot water, the Black pudding is ready to be sliced up and ready to be eaten. And yes, it looks much better once cooked.
#5 Guyana White Pudding
Unlike the previous recipe, this one doesn’t use blood. And because it’s made mainly with rice, you can also call this a rice sausage.
For this recipe, chefs mix some white rice, coconut milk, wiri-wiri peppers, marid man pork leaf, fine leaf thyme, a bit of garlic and some chopped onion, and some even add a little bit of brown sugar to the mix.
Then, the procedure is mainly the same. They fill up the pork casings and you boil the sausages in a large pot. Once the rice is cooked, the sausages are ready.
#4 Guyana Garlic Pork
What’s the main ingredient in garlic pork?! Well, garlic, of course. And boy, this recipe sure has a lot of it. Now, you will obviously need some pork too, but the main thing is still the garlic.
You will need to marinate the cubed pork shoulder in a 1/2- pound of garlic paste, some white vinegar, salt wiri-wiri peppers and fine leaf thyme, all of which will be chopped finely. Now, You leave that marinade overnight, you then strain it from the vinegar and fry it in a hot pan.
#3 Guyana Salara
For those of you wondering what Salara is… it’s a form of sweet bread roll that has this gorgeous red filling inside. Yeah, this is what it should look like.
As for some of the ingredients inside, the recipe is made with some pretty basic stuff. They first make the sweet dough, and then they roll it out. After spreading some butter, they sprinkle on a mixture of coconut, sugar, vanilla extract and red food coloring. It’s then rolled into a log and baked in the oven.
#2 Guyana Corn in Coconut Milk
This is how you turn corn on the cob into a hearty dish. You get some onions, spinach, bell peppers, thyme and cut up pieces of corn on the cob. You boil everything in some coconut milk until reduced and pour it into a bowl. Imagine eating this on a cold winter’s day while you’re tucked into a cozy bed.
#1 Guyana Fat Top
We’re going to end this video with a sweet recipe. If you’ve never heard of the Guyanese Fat Top, then you should know that it’s a simple cake made with coconut milk and cornmeal. Inside you can find spices like ginger, cardamom, nutmeg and sugar. The cake is then baked in the oven. Before it’s cooked, you take it out of the oven and you pour over the coconut milk mixed with some brown sugar. You bake it a little longer, to get that ooey-gooey layer for which the Fat Top is known.
On a related note, we wanted to know if you’ve ever tried any of these Traditional Guyanese dishes? You can tell us in the comment section below. If you'd like more videos like these, don't forget to subscribe to our channel and hit the bell icon so you never miss any of them. And as always, thanks for watching guys.
Does your country have a similar eggplant dish? Pakistanis have baingan bharta, Arabs have babaganoush, Guyanese have BAIGON CHOKA.

#7 Plantain Chips
We thought we would start off this list with one very simple dish. It’s no secret that the Guyanese love plantains, but did you know that making chips from this banana-like vegetable is actually one of the favorite snacks of the nation?
There’s not a party that goes by where you won’t get a hefty serving of some plantain chips right next to the rum punch. Whether it’s with salsa or just plain, you can find them all over Guyana. Supermarkets and grocery stores are full of them. https://crossbuns.com
#6 Egg Balls
And from a simple dish, we move down to one of the more complex traditional foods. It’s called an egg ball, and it’s made with, you guessed it, eggs.
You first need to hard boil some eggs. While the eggs are cooking on the stove, you need to peel and cut your cassava. You boil that as well and then you mash it. Once it’s all nicely mashed, you will add chili paste, garlic, some spices, salt to taste and of course, an egg to bind it all together.
You then peel the eggs, and cover them inside a handful of mashed cassava. The Egg and cassava ball will be rolled into some flour and deep fried. We don’t think we need to tell you how delicious these are, right?!
#5 Chicken Foot
We thought it would be kind of weird to note that they have fried-chicken as a traditional dish, but it’s true that the Guyanese love themselves some chicken. They eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, baked, friend, boiled and in a stew… and they’ve even named a street food after it.
It has nothing to do with chicken, but the people love it so much that they decided to name this fried, doughy street food after it. It’s a dough with curry and cumin that is fried and you can get it as a snack. You better do, because it’s one of the most popular dishes in the country.
#4 Roti
This is one of the traditional flat breads of Guyana, and the special technique of cooking makes the bread absolutely to die for.
It’s made from wheat flour, water, salt and baking powder. But the thing that makes it special is the oil. They add it to the dough after the first roll, they add it after the second roll, and then they coat it a third time during cooking. That’s what makes it fluffy, moist and a must have with every stew, curry or soup.
#3 Metemgee
If you’re wondering what Metemgee is, then here’s a little insider info. It’s a stew made with coconut milk, huge chunks of plantains and cassava. That takes care of the earthy taste that is typical for Guyanese cuisine, but it’s not nearly finished.
You also need to add some salted fish into the mix, and those soft and melt in your mouth buttery dumplings that you add to the stew right before taking it off the heat. This is a dish that must be on your “have to try”-list if you ever go to Guyana.
#2 Pepperpot
This is the dish that you will see in Guyana on Christmas Morning. Almost every household prepares it and accompanies it with some home-cooked bread. The authentic flavor derives from the cassareep, which is cassava-root syrup.
It usually consists of beef, cinnamon, some onions and garlic, and of course, cassareep. You add all these ingredients to a pot, pour in some water, and cook for several hours. This will intensify the flavor, and make the meat melt in your mouth. Mh-mmm.
#1 Cassava Bread
For our last pick, we decided to include one of the staples of the country, the Cassava Bread. It’s made from, you guessed it, cassava roots, and you will find it accompanying almost every dish in Guyana. guyana food is one of the best.

I’m back in The Bahamas to dive deeper into Nassau’s real food scene and everyday island life.
We’re starting with warm rum cake, then hitting Sumtin Good 242 for Bahamian comfort food and fresh conch. From Tastee Patties and ice cream to Do Doons for Haitian food, this island is way more diverse than most tourists ever see.
I’m checking out Airbnbs and hotels, stopping at Cable Beach for a quick dive, and visiting the Queen’s Staircase to see if it is actually worth the hype. At Graycliff Hotel, we step into a world of wine, chocolate, and cigars, and I even end up talking about the meaning of life. We wrap it all up at Dino’s Conch Salad, one of Nassau’s most famous food spots, to see if it really delivers. This is real Bahamian food, real people, and real island culture.

I’m in The Bahamas to hunt down the cheapest and most expensive food this island has to offer. We’re starting on the low end at Bamboo Shack and Checkers Cafe, tasting the real local fast food that Bahamians actually eat. Then I’m heading into the Straw Market to meet the artists and vendors who work nonstop and still struggle to compete with big tourism money.
After that, it’s breakfast at Captain Vinny’s before we head out on a boat to try the famous pigs and eat fresh seafood right on the water. We’re checking out Antiki, the floating bar with surprisingly good food and some of the best island vibes in Nassau.
And then we go all the way to the top with Sapodilla Estate, one of the most luxurious fine dining experiences in The Bahamas. From the cheapest plates to the priciest meals, this is the real story of Bahamian food.

If you’re visiting The Bahamas, you don’t want to miss the local food—and it’s a lot more than just resort buffets. In this video, we break down what to eat in The Bahamas, focusing on traditional Bahamian dishes you’ll actually see locals ordering.
We talk about classic foods like fried snapper, cracked conch, conch salad, and other seafood staples that define Bahamian cuisine. We also explain where you’re most likely to find the best local food, including fish fries, small local restaurants, and casual beachside spots.
Beyond the food, we also cover important restaurant culture tips in The Bahamas, including:
How paying at restaurants works
Cash vs credit cards
Tipping customs and expectations
What service is like compared to the U.S.
If you want to eat well, avoid awkward moments when the check comes, and understand how dining really works in The Bahamas, this video will help you enjoy your meals—and your trip—a lot more.

TLDR : BAHAMIAN FOOD IS TOP TIER
I’m in The Bahamas to eat my way across Nassau and uncover the real island food scene. But I'm also telling the story of the people and the culture of the Bahamas. We’re starting on the beach, then heading to McKenzie’s at Potter’s Cay Dock for fresh conch straight from the boat. From Jamaican jerk to Sky Juice to true Bahamian street food, this is the side of Nassau most tourists never taste.
We’re cracking coconuts, trying Dole Whip by the cruise port, and showing how to get around the island like a local. Then it’s resort hopping through Baha Mar, Comfort Suites, the Cloisters, and Cabbage Beach. At night, we hit Tuga to see where Nassau’s real energy comes alive. This is the ultimate Bahamas food tour. Let’s eat.

🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.
